Mr. Francis Leung was a prominent investment banker in Asia with nearly 30 years of experience in investment banking. He has helped and advised many companies on corporate finance transactions including initial public offerings, mergers and acquisitions and other fund raising exercises. Mr. Leung pioneered the listing of Mainland Chinese companies, initially in the form of “Red Chips” and subsequently in H-shares, on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He is hence often referred to as the “Father of Red Chips”.
Mr. Leung serves as the Chairman of the Chamber of Hong Kong Listed Companies. He was a member of the 12th National Committee of the China People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Mr. Leung was the Chairman of Citigroup Investment Banking, Asia from July 2001 to June 2006. Prior to joining Citigroup Global Markets, he was successively the Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of BNP Paribas Peregrine, which was formed in January 1998 with the merging of Peregrine Group’s Greater China equity and corporate finance team and BNP’s investment banking arm in Asia. The Peregrine Group was co-founded by Mr. Leung in 1988 where he led the equity capital market and corporate finance business focusing on the Greater China region. He began his career with Wardley Limited (now named HSBC Investment Bank Asia Holdings Limited) as an executive trainee in 1980, and then joined Citicorp International Limited (a member of Citigroup) in 1985.
Mr. Leung has also been an active angel and VC investor. His investment interests span from fintech, real estate tech, new media, travel tech, to artificial intelligence, among other areas. His geographical focus includes Greater China, Israel and the U.S. Mr. Leung aims at discovering disruptive technologies and business models that are managed by entrepreneurs and management teams that exemplify exceptional execution capabilities. He often offers great strategic value to his investees by providing them with insightful financial advice and introducing them to business partners within his unparalleled business network. Mr. Leung’s ability to connect overseas companies with the Greater China market and his business contacts has great significance to his overseas investments.
